Moving into your home

Becoming a resident

When you become a Sarsen resident you will sign a tenancy agreement.   This sets out the rights and responsibilities of you and your landlord. We will give you a copy of your tenancy agreement, a rent payment schedule, a handbook with useful information, advice on home contents insurance, copies of gas and electricity certificates and one set of keys.

Before you move in

Your neighbourhood housing officer will meet you and explain your rights and responsibilities as a resident and ours as a landlord, our range of services and how to pay your rent, claim benefits and order a repair. We'll also give you a leaflet about our lettings standards so you know what standards to expect inside and outside your home.

When you move in

When you move in you will need to take over the new electricity, water and gas supplies and read the meters at your old and new address. Don’t forget to tell the council tax office that you have moved. If you are claiming benefits, let your local

council know your new address.

Insuring your home

We insure homes against any damage to the property, structure and fixtures caused by fire, flood or storm.

We strongly recommend you take out home contents insurance for any damage to personal belongings, carpets, furniture and other household contents and decorations. This should include cover for accidents, such as broken glass or a burst pipe.

Home improvements

Before you move in, we will inspect your home and do any urgent repairs. Minor repairs may be done after you have moved in.

You can put in your own fittings as long as you do not damage or remove anything or make changes to the property. If you want to make changes, check first to see if you need our permission.
